Today's the first day of London Fashion Week, but we're still recovering from New York's major bashes, which finally ended in the wee small hours of this morning. We may not remember all of them (thanks to our favorite bartender at the Jane Hotel for helping with that…) but thankfully, the office computer does. Here's a rundown of the best parties of the season, as shot through the lens of an iPhone 4.
TOPSHOP'S IMPROMPTU DANCE PARTY @ TOPSHOP US FLAGSHIP
Imagine this: DJ Becka Diamond climbs up into the DJ booth at Topshop's New York megastore. She quietly pulls up some of her besties – Nike designer Kristin Reiter, her partner Valerie Killeen of BleachBlack.com, the actress Byrdie Bell, and the artist Blue Logan – and begins to blare "Born this Way," which debuted that day on iTunes. Suddenly, the entire store erupts in dancing – cashiers, shoppers, even security guards. Meanwhile, the DJ booth is so packed with It Kids, you'd think it was a photo shoot. Nope, just a way to blow off steam during a particularly cold and crowded New York Fashion Week.
RAG & BONE AFTERPARTY @ WESTWAY
This hot new club isn't even open yet, but somehow New York's infamous party curators Matt Kliegman and Carlos Quirarte, managed to bring in a major crowd for Rag & Bone's triumphant apres catwalk bash. We spotted Sienna Miller, Julie Gilhart, and Hanne Gabay Odile dancing around this former strip club, while designers like Gigi Burris and Derek Lam came to offer their congratulations to David Neville and Marcus Wainwright on a job very well done.
GRAND LIFE BLOGGER BASH @ TRIBECA GRAND
Bloggers often get a bad rap during Fashion Week, but even if they did get better seats than you during the collections, they sure know how to throw a dance party. Though it was past 14-year-old Tavi's bedtime, Susie hosted the boum with Bryan Boy, Phil Oh (The Streetpeeper), Rumi Neely (Fashion Toast), and party czar Steven Rojas, whose girlfriend, the model and design student Naomi Thomas, was fresh off the Steven Alan catwalk that morning. Around 1am, Brooklyn band Creep took over the hotel's basement movie theater and played a crushing (in a good way) electric set.
PURPLE DIARY PARTY @ THE STANDARD HOTEL
Picture this: Karen Elson, Paz de la Huerta, and Mary Kate Olsen must actually stand in a normal queue for the Standard Hotel elevator because the party is already so packed. That's what happened when Olivier Zham and his uber-Frenchies took over The Boom Boom Room and Le Bain – the two exclusive clubs on the hotel's top floor. Industry leaders like Opening Ceremony's Humberto Leon and designer Olivier Theyskens arrived fashionably early, as did Lily Donaldson, Jared Leto, Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, Tallulah Harlech, and Ruby Aldridge – although the MVP Award goes to model Cory Kennedy and Interview stylist Ellin Svahn, who braved zero-degree temperatures to hold a champagne toast (with a breathtaking view of Manhattan) on the hotel's roof. Okay, some of it spilled on a certain Rodarte runway dress, but thankfully, nobody noticed…
DOSSIER VALENTINE'S PARTY @ THE JANE HOTEL
"Um, excuse me, I think you're lying on my coat?" That was Kirsten Dunst at 3am, when the dance party in the Jane Hotel's massive ballroom was literally shaking the walls. As Motown oldies blared through the speakers, Dunst and model Liz Carmicheal were nearly toppled by throngs of kids dancing on the hotel's antique tables, as Ally Hilfiger, Harley Viera-Newton, designer Waris Ahrulia, and director Wes Anderson huddled together on the plush balcony couches. Also spotted: stylist Emily Eisen, aka Lady Gaga's fashion assistant, huddled in the corner with her cell phone. We hope the conversation involved a meat dress…
KANYE WEST AT THE MONDRIAN HOTEL, NEW YORK
Another place that isn't open; another amazing bash. The Mondrian in Los Angeles is one of fashion's favorite places, and its Manhattan outpost launches on March 1, complete with a decadent bar called Mr. H, helmed by former Bungalow 8 doorman Armin Armiri. For the latest cover of V Man, Kanye West posed with money in his mouth. For his party, he hopped on top of the bar (and dangerously close to a crystal chandelier) and raised his arms. Money began flying from the ceiling, leaving the been-there-grabbed-that crowd laughing and cheering, and the fashion neophytes (mainly young models and pretty magazine interns) with enough cash for a limousine home. As for Kanye and his friends – Alexander Wang, Jazzi De Lisser, Zoe Kravitz, and Sean Lennon – we think they managed just fine without the $5 bills falling from the sky.
