Calling all accessories lovers! We’re currently head over heels for Freedom’s designer collaborations that have just landed in our Oxford Circus store. What a line-up! From the punky studs and hard-edged glamour of Maria Francesca Pepe or the colourful cuboids of Fred Butler, to the pretty curlicues and gothic romance of Zoe and Morgan, and from the cartoonish headpieces of Piers Atkinson to the ironic pom-pom earrings of Henry Holland, we really couldn’t be happier with the treasures on offer. We caught up with some of the designers to find out about their inspirations and what makes them tick.
Zoe and Morgan:
Design siblings Zoe and Morgan had a love of fine jewellery bred into them at a very early age, watching their father Douglas Sibbald at work on his own accessories. The siblings launched their label in 2006 – Watch out for twisting serpents, skull motifs and fanciful angel wings in their beautifully crafted pieces.
The girl that wears our pieces is… A girl who likes the idea of keeping and treasuring a special piece of jewellery for a life time.
Known and loved for his iconic headwear, Piers Atkinson has many strings to bow – artist, illustrator, milliner, costume designer, party organiser, fashion editor, project manager, to name a few! We can't get enough of the kitsch pieces he's designed for us.
My fashion icons are… Grace Jones, Anna Dello Russo and Paloma Faith.
My design inspiration is… Life!
Hot on my rader for 2012 is… Love.
If I could any super power it would be… To create love on a global scale!
Known for his fun and irreverent designs, Henry Holland launched his label in 2006 with a series of tees. Now with a diffusion line, a sunglasses range, and a side role in TV presenting under his belt, Holland’s brand has officially hit the stratosphere.
The kind of girl who wears my pieces is… The best kind!
My fashion icons are… Mary Kate Olsen – she is exactly who I would want to be if I was a girl, and I would spend my billions on the exact same things.
My favourite fashion moment is… Versace 1991
My earliest fashion memory is… Being given the day off school by my mum because she needed help to pick some shoes for a wedding outfit.
If I could have any superpower, I would have… Invisibility – I’m well nosey!
Maria Francesca Pepe:
Italian-born Maria Francesca Pepe made her name in sharply tailored womenswear with a distinctly punky edge. The move into accessories for the Italian designer was a natural progression, and her hard-edged glamour translates perfectly into precious metals and rare jewels.
Home is… Milano, Puglia (where I was born) and anywhere else I can find peace.
My fashion icons are… Femme fatal Theda Bara and a bit of Chloe Sevigny.
My design inspiration is… Pop culture, religions, symbolism.
My earliest fashion memory is… Cutting clothes for my Barbies.
Favoured by rebellious style icons, Fred Butler’s avant-garde designs are an industry favourite. As an accessories and prop designer, Butler’s work can just as often be seen setting the scene for Vogue and i-D shoots as it is on the heads of fashion’s boldest stars.
Home is… My studio, because I spend the majority of my time there.
My fashion icons are… Those who have been brave to stick to their vision and made work to inspire and enlighten with integrity, passion and humour.
The soundtrack to my life would be… Michael Jackson – Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, Aretha Franklin – Respect and Dee-Lite – Groove Is In The Heart. They’re best songs to dance to, and I LOVE dancing!
We’re also getting ready for the launch of Freedom’s new Premium range! Expect to see perfectly luxe pieces with standout detailing and statement accents. Keep your eyes peeled, because it’ll be available to shop online as well as in our Oxford Circus flagship very, very soon.
