What… Meadham Kirchhoff SS13. After the spectacles the design duo have created the past few seasons at London Fashion Week, there was a lot of excitement in the air!
Where… The Topshop Showspace, Bedford Square turned Marie Antoinette boudoir; brimming with Pomp de Franc cupcakes, enticing red apples, enormous bouquets of yellow and pink roses amidst peonies, berries and stunning inflorescence courtesy of the style sets’ favourite florist Wild At Heart.
Who… All the biggest names in fashion! Hamish Bowles was sat front row with his little nephew (looking very dapper in a pinstripe blazer) next to Derek Blasberg of Harpers Bazaar, Kate Phelan (of course) and Sarah Mower. London’s coolest kids also turned up to see what London’s enfants terribles would create – think Hannah Lambert, Laura Chatterton and Kim Howells in a rainbow mix of fluro brights!
The show in 5 words… Excessive – couture in the making.
What we loved… The exquisite attention to detail – everything had a surprise. From hidden cummerbunds and gorgeous floral wreaths to bow-embellished stockings, pearls, beads and red-sequin pompoms galore – to call it simply beautiful would be an understatement.
Hero piece… As such huge lovers of bows, it was hard to pick just one! A black velvet gold-thread, pearl and bead-embellished boned jacket, cinched and fastened with white ribbon or the red full-skirted ball gown adorned with blue bows that we’d like to go to a party in a chateau wearing!
Hair loving… Angelic, cherubim doll-like ringlets, swept up (and sewed!) into a Renaissance style, jewel-encrusted chignon, concealing two plaits underneath.
Beauty notes… Rosy cheeks, pink pouts and feathered brows complete with diamante beauty spots placed generously from the temples to the tips of the models’ spines.
Inspired by… As far as the show notes suggested, ‘A Cautionary Tale’ – the ending was left to interpretation but if the initial pre-show warning was anything to go by (a frantic female voice declaring she was “caught in a trap”), Meadham Kirchhoff’s girls more than likely came to a beautiful end.
