We’re excited to share this extraordinary treat with you: Tavi Gevinson’s first book. The name of her masterpiece? Rookie Yearbook One – an inspiring and colourful collection of interviews, articles, photo editorials and illustrations of Tavi’s most popular online magazine.
Now we are quite sure that everybody knows this but just quickly for the record: Tavi Gevinson is the editor and founder of ROOKIE – the highly praised online mag that broke one million page views within its first six days. The site has more than 50 regular writers, photographers and illustrators — many of whom are also teenage girls like Gevinson. Past celebrity contributors and interviewees have included Zooey Deschanel, Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler. Just flick through Tavi’s current fashion friends and insiders and you stumble across the likes of Lula Editor Leith Clark, New York-based blogger Ari Seth Cohen or ‘This American Life’ host Ira Glass. All this from one amazing 16-year old girl!
The big bang of Rookie (before its actual existence) took place in a cosy place called Tavi’s bedroom in the suburban Oak Park, Illinios. Back then it was just her and her personal blog Style Rookie. Within two years, the blog was averaging 50,000 hits per day and the fashion world took notice. Disenchanted with the media available to her generation Tavi took matters into her own hands and decided to start her own website and so, Rookie was born.
Tavi’s Yearbook ties together all her interests including fashion, culture, art and particularly, feminism within 296 pages of eye candy and a best-of Rookie material from September 2011 – May 2012. Plus, it comes with a dazzling paper crown designed by our beloved Meadham Kirchhoff.
As Tavi told us on her blog: “It is not, however, a lame website-to-paper copy-and-paste situation. (…) I believe in the power of writing and art that you can hold in your hands, and I promise that looking at all this stuff in print is a different experience from reading it online.”
It’s not just a different experience – it’s an indication of how the ingenious this Illinois teen will make the magic in the future of fashion happen. Obviously, this has been added straight to our wishlist! How about you?
