Last season’s Unique girl was stripped-back and toned-down – a perfect exercise in minimalism. Flash forward and flip over for Autumn – the new muse is maximal in every way: piled-up textures, fabric clashes, and a siren red that can’t be missed. Minimalism? This girl wipes the floor with it!
The Topshop design team were looking to blue-collar Middle England for their latest offering – the sprawling urban centres of Britain and the life that teemed within. So clothes were mismatched with attitude: sequins with matted mohair, sheepskin with PVC. This is a girl who works in the local pub and goes to Britpop gigs with the money she’s earned, dressing up with originality and spunk.
The first look said it all. Cara Delevingne, glowering and stomping down the runway in clashing shades of black: a high-shine lacquered skirt with a cropped mohair top and a killer pair of Cuban heels. Eyelids were streaked with electric blue, hair textured like it was slept in the night before.
As each model followed one by one, we got a clear vision of who this girl is – she’s basically a die-hard Topshop girl. The design team honed in even further this season on what women want to wear: it’s easy, it’s sassy, and it always makes a statement. Cue standout pieces such as the dusty pink patchwork biker, which looked easy and fresh slung over a ponyskin tee and loose slacks. Or the Del Boy-like oversized sheepskin jacket that worked perfectly against the slick shine of a vinyl A-line skirt.
And the ultra-covetable outerwear (we have a feeling the fashion editors will be queuing up for that outsize chubby) was perfectly complimented by pieces to party in. Who’d have thought soft palest pink could look so cool? In an ultra-girly circle skirt it caught the light and our imaginations, paired with a slouchy biker jacket and brazen strappy shoes.
Certain pieces are fast becoming Unique signatures: the killer jumpsuit, the wear-with-anything longline skirt, the louche backless party dress. Those pieces we crave are only bettered by the attitude we – and you – will wear them with.
And that’s something to be pretty proud of.
