Who… All hail the king of sequins, the champion of the slogans, the fabulous Ashish! This legend of British fashion is back once again at the Topshop Showspace after today’s announcement that he’ll be teaming up with Topshop for a designer collaboration line in May.
Where… At the Topshop Showspace at Tate Modern’s iconic Turbine Hall, of course!
Front row… East London’s finest cool kids and the movers and shakers who make tacky-tasteful. Our favourite comeback Queen Lily Allen cosied up to drag icon Jodie Harsh and multi-coloured model and general cool-girl Chloe Norgaard sat a few seats down.
The collection in five words…. Princess Peach meets sporty-luxe.
What we loved… The details. This may have been all pink and fluffy and glittery on the outside but when we got up close and personal with the individual pieces it was jaw-dropping to see the craft and finesse that had gone into them. Chanel-like co-ords painstakingly encrusted with pearls and iridescent sequins alongside grey sweats lined delicately with pink net.
Inspired by… Pearly Kings and Queens. French Maids. Cinderella. Gymwear. What wasn’t it inspired by! There were sequins covered French Maid outfits, dramatic monochrome Commedia Dell’arte-style blouses and marshmallow pink Cinderella gowns threaded with glow sticks. That’s not forgetting the obvious influence of the Pearly Kings and Queens and of course, nineties sportswear in embellished varsity jackets and jerseys.
Hero piece… The shoes! For any of you nineties kids nostalgic about your LA Gear trainers, you’re in luck! The light-up platform Buffalo boots will be launched as part of the Topshop x Ashish collaboration in May.
Hair Loving…. Big, back-combed and beautiful. Topped with an encrusted tiara.
Beauty…. PINK! Shocking pink to draw our high cheekbones with lashes of glitter and more pink shading around the peepers.
End Notes… The happiest collection we’ve seen in a while that was made incredible by the stellar team! Mainly, our crush Anna Trevelyan at CLM, who worked her magic on the styling and the dramatic finale in which a single shaved-headed girl walked the runway in a sequin T-shirt powerfully stating “Love Will Win”. The only thing left to wonder is when on earth we can get our hands on these pieces?!
