5 Staple Pieces You Need To Actually Dress Like A French Girl This Season

Although the world has always been fascinated by the elusive French-girl cool, the recent release of Netflix show Emily in Paris has undoubtedly reignited our love for this ever-chic look. While protagonist Emily dons a stereotypical ‘American in Paris’ look featuring plenty of bright colours and patterns, her new friend Camille and boss Sylvie provide all the pared-back yet elevated outfits we were longing for. It got us thinking about what all the French girls would be wearing this season, so we compiled a list of the five staple pieces they’d definitely have in their autumn winter wardrobe. Keep reading and get ready to feel like a Parisian wherever we are…

1. Trench coats

French style is always very effortless but still manages to always look elevated and put together. No matter how simple your outfit may be, throwing a trench coat on top is a surefire way to look timelessly chic but with a nonchalant edge. A classic camel colour is a great place to start, but if you already have one of those, don’t be afraid to try out some different colours and textures to expand your collection.

2. Tailored pieces

Good tailoring never goes out of style and, for the French, a crisp white shirt and an oversized (but well-fitting) blazer is the starting point for any great outfit. Remember: the white shirt doesn’t always have to insinuate school-girl or corporate, so experiment with details like exaggerated cuffs or scallop detailing for a refreshed style. And with blazers, keep it simple with the colour palette and you’ll find they pair over practically anything.

3. Straight leg jeans

A staple in any wardrobe, any time of year, is a good pair of jeans. To wear them the French girl way, we’d avoid any trending styles for your day to day and stick to a classic fit like our much-loved straight leg. A mid or bleach blue shade will never fail you, but an ecru and washed black pair are also great to have in your wardrobe too. Wear these for day or night and you’ll suddenly wonder how you ever survived without.

4. Simple boots

You can play around a bit more when it comes to accessories like shoes or bags, but for the most part, keep it classic to nail the French-girl look. For the colder seasons, a good pair of black boots will be your new best friend. The heel should never be too high so that they can take you from day to night with ease and no discomfort. We like to pair ours with jeans, skirts, dresses, tailored trousers -you name it. And, if they’re not wearing these, we imagine the French wearing a pair of box-fresh white trainers.

5. Classic bags

The best bags never go out of style, so we’ve rounded up our favourite classic styles – with an honourable mention to our new-in croissant bag, of course. The trick is to stick to neutral tones when picking out your new go-to bag, so it goes with everything and you can just grab it ever so nonchalantly when heading out the door. Size doesn’t really matter so just go for whichever fits all of your essentials in and feels comfortable to you.
